What's new

My new 50mm f1.8!(C&C pics)

#4 is my fav. The thing I had to get used to after I got my first prime (that same lens) was that I often shot too wide, lots of time at 1.8, and my pictures ended up having a depth of field that was way too shallow; like in the first 2. Just takes lots of shooting to find what aperture you'll need for the correct DOF in a given situation. I just upgraded to the Sigma 1.4, for instance, but rarely shoot at 1.4. Spent the extra $400 for the better AF motor, improved saturation, and better overall image quality. You'll have fun with the 50mm though, especially with those pets!

That is one of the best lenses, but as dakkon76 said, watch out for leaving it wide open all the time. I had that problem too. :) It is super sharp between F7-9. Have fun with it!!

Third one is my favorite, I always want to do pics of my dog like that but hate having his penis on full blast lol .. so this is a good creative way to keep it from stealing all the focus in the photo! I'm going to have to try that now. I love dogs so it's hard to get a bad photo of them.

I love that lens too, I have the same one and it's very hard for me to get my focus just right. You did really well, especially for your first time using it. Since you asked about the lens that's the only thing I'll critique you on and remember, this is from someone who often misses focus herself.

#'s 3 & 4 the focus looks just right!

I don't like on the second one how the nose is blurred and then the eyes in focus, it kinda steals the attention.

The first one looks like the nose is all in focus but it seems just a bit soft.. I either would have went for the eyes full OOF or full IN focus .. so it wasn't a 'did they mean to do that or not' type question.

Good job overall! LOVE the dogs.

Congratulations on picking one of the best primes available. Do not worry about the f/1.8 speed, as most pictures are not shot below that number. Many of us shoot lenses that are slower (f/2.8 & f/3.5) and get along just fine

I see now how the focus on the first two is off. Thanks for all your feedback, it really helps.

#2 the second eye is missing.

#3 DOF is too shallow, try increasing the fstop to get the dog completely in focus.

#3 is the best but a bit under exposed.

#4 would have been a good shot if it wasn't for the background, you have done the right things like getting down low to the dogs level and got good focus but you missed the background, if you had moved to your left a few feet you would have got a nicer shot of the dog and maybe a better background

I agree with this. Despite that #4 is still my favorite and I think it is pretty good. Every time I try and take pictures of my dog from a low angle like that she comes over and gets in my face :)

Thank you all.

hydkaran420, what is the fstop?

I shoot lots of dog but never go below F4 but with longer lenses than 50mm , most of my shots are taken under studio lighting but here's one of my dog at F4
