So, since school pictures are ridiculously priced, I figured I would take a chance at some portrait photography. I am horrible with taking portraits, but I gave it a shot.





That's my boy, I tell him to look up at me and this is the look he gives me, hahahaha. This is totally him though, and while it may not be great for a typical portrait, it works great for me

The white balance in the color images is off making his face look a little green. The chopped of chin and top of head in the first one ruins tat one for me. The second one where we see his teeth in the smile would be the best one if we had eye contact with him. Also when photographing people with glasses you MUST pay attention to reflections in the lenses. Repositioning them or even slightly moving the head can make a big difference with those reflections.

Thanks LightGuru. I mainly stick to macro, landscape, and automotive photography, so all those tips really help. This is the first set of photography portraits I have ever done. I noticed that with the glasses after I shot the photo's. I honestly wasn't even thinking about it but kicked myself for not thinking about it. He is very fair skinned which made the white balance difficult for me, and the bright green shirt didn't help much. I should have had him wear a darker colored shirt, but that green matched the green of his glasses so well. Oh well, live and learn and apply the new knowledge next time.I will say that I have a whole new level of respect for portrait photographers now. I ended up keeping about 8 of the photos I took that were my favorite. To be honest though, I love these because they really captured him for who he is. I got some great smiles and a great "are we done yet dad" look, . That's better than just some run of the mill school photo . But once again, thank you for the great tips!

I just had my little sisters bring home their photo day packet things and was a bit disgusted with the crazy prices as well. I offered to take the photos for my step mom but she opted to get them done from the school (dunno why ). Good job on getting out of your comfort zone and taking what I think are some great photos!
