You mentioned you're considering the SB-600. It will be most effective when it is off the hot shoe.

A less expensive alternative (but no TTL) would be to get something like a Vivitar 285 HV, a radio trigger set, a light stand, a 45" umbrella, and a reflector...all for about the cost of the SB-600.

A month or so later, pick up a second 285HV, umbrella and stand. The trigger set I linked to comes with a transmitteer and 2 receivers so you'd already have a receiver for the second 285HV.
