name this moth?

found this moth, with its wings folded up it looked exactly like a leaf from a distance. but i have no idea what kind of moth t is. any ideas?

I believe that is a Gypsy Moth. They are also tomato horn worms at one stage of their lives. At least that's my guess.

i'll trust you on this one, so i guess it's name is Clarence the Gypsy Moth
 
Well, it's probably not a good idea to trust someone who's just guessing. I looked up the Gypsy Moth and now I don't think that's what it is any longer. I will stick with the tomato hornworm moth though. I've seen these around my tomato plants. The tomato horn worm is an ugly sucker. cleverly disguised to resemble a curled leaf on a tomato plant; they are hard to spot but terribly destructive.
 
Hmm I don't have any US moth ID books, but you might want to try searching around US hawk moths - it looks a little like it shares the same shape as a hawk moth and there are many variations of them so it could be one.

i checked out the tomato hornworm, and that's not it.

i checked out the hawk moth, and you're right. its a poplar hawk-moth.
