need advice about filtering sunlight.

i will be taking portrait like photos of people, and they will be under a gazebo. is there a special tyupe of material that will let the sunlight through beut diffuse it so its not that harsh.

is it possible to use a reflector? I"m not sure since it might be difficult to reflect light into a gazebo.
