Need for a Telephoto Lens

Since you can significantly crop the center of an image from a sensor with say 10 or more megapixels, is the need for a telephoto lens lessened? I am about to buy my first digital SLR and have been wondering if I can get by with a shorter focal length because of this. Thanks!
