need help with camera choice

first let me start by saying im not a photographer so there for a little dim when it comes to any terminology or any sort of understanding when it comes to photography.

i am a painter and a textiles artist currently studying a fine art degree. most of my work is created from photos ive taken. the problem is as ive said befor im not a photographer so i struggle to get good quality images to work from.

i curently have an olympus u1060 with a 7 x optical zoom and is 10 mega pixals.

the problem i have is the flash goes of even in good light which then makes the subject in the picture really white and laking in colour. if i turn the flash off the pictures come out blurry or really orange in tone.

what advice can any one give me on what camra would be better for me to get good quality pictures or any thing i can do to my current camera to stop this from happening.

i wouldn't be looking to spend loads of money as i am a student.

You could probably find a D40 or D60 on the cheap.

Take a look at the Canon G11. Doesn't sound like you need the complications and expense of a DSLR.
