Photos OK to edit
I am very new to photography and I just bought my first DSLR. Canon Rebel...

It comes with a 18-55mm lense and I want to buy a telephoto lense before I go away on holidays in Europe..

I have two options:

a 28-200mm Sigma for $150
0r a 75mm -300 Canon f4-5.6 for $200
or a 55mm - 200 Canon f4.5-5.6 for $200

All used but in good condition..

I like to buy the 75mm to 300mm but if I get that do I lose the range between 55mm to 75mm??

I need advice from all the pros on this site..

Thanks

You won't miss the gap between 55 to 75.

One more question

What is the differnet between

Canon EOS 75-300mm III and
Canon EOS 75-300mm USM?

Thanks

USM is Ultra Sonic Motor. It's the motor that focuses the lens. USM is better than non-USM. Although, Canon has two types of USM...one being much better than the other.

The III is just the third generation of the lens.

I have the 75-300 III USM, it's a decent consumer grade lens...but it's not near as good as a much more expensive telephoto lens would be.

Here in a article about the 75-300 IS USM. IS is image stabilization...it's a great option to have on a telephoto lens...but very expensive.

IF you are going the consumer lens route the 75-300mm is a decent lens, though the IS would be nice. Another option is the Sigma 70-300mm APO Macro DG, around the same price range but a pretty good lens for the price.

The kit lens is not too shabby, I've gotten pretty good results from it so you could use that for wider shots for landscapes and street photography.

To be honest with you, If I could have done it again, I wouldn't have bought my sigma lens(which I sold) and save up or splurge for a better quality lens. It is well worth it in the long run.

hi. i have the same camera ( and it rocks!xx) with the twin lens kit 18-55 and 75-300 - i love this big lens but am imagining i will love it even more once i buy a tripod -its pretty heavy to hand hold with zero shake - so if you are handholding, up the ISO? I've been quite happy handholding in good light situations but i'm sure i'd get a sharper image using a tripod xx I'm buying a 50mm f1.8 lens SOON as ive heard great reports on its speed/ sharpness and value for $

Look, the Canon EF-S 18-55mm 3.5-5.6 "kit lens" is really so limited... it's no fun. You are going to be outdoors... you need some reach and some width, all at the same time.

You really want to use a lens to kind of gets it all... a "utility lens"... and with that I recommend the TAmROn SP AF18-200 f/3.5-6.3 XR Di II LD lens. Don't let the name put you off... this is a vvvVVERY capable lens for a Canon.

Read the following review (first one, below), find a good price and buy this lens. It's a "one-size fits all" solution for the beginner or lightweight traveller. The lens only weighs 14 ounces.

Good luck with this new approach... I think you'll see why when you put it on your camera.

If you can't find one to mount, locally... use this website to see the focal range in action...
