Hey guys :)
I am going out today on the ice road to take some pictures. It will be my first time taking pictures in the snow with my D3100. Can anyone give me some advice on how to NOT make the snow blow out or turn blue!? I can't quiet figure it out..as I'm still really new at all this!

Thanks :)

I find that when using AWB, the camera has troubles with the snow. If you set the WB to Sunny, or Cloudy it should be fine. As far as exposure goes, just keep an eye on the histogram/highlights on the playback screen and adjust exposure to compensate. Shooting in RAW will give you a little more flexibility when you get home.

:)

Good luck!

Agree! Set your WB to the appropriate setting (Bright sun, cloud, or shade) and also don't forget to you'll have to over-expose by 1 - 1 1/2 stops in order to avoid dark, grey, snow (This is becuase your camera's light meter assumes that the snow is 18% grey).

I agree with Flems, with one exception... shooting in RAW won't give you "a little more" flexibility... it will give you ALOT more flexibility when you get home. If you're having issues with white-balance, consider that you can tweak WB on RAW photos in any way you please and the resulting image isn't degraded, at all.

Shoot RAW and you'll thank yourself later, believe me. Pegging white-balance in the field can be tricky sometimes and the flexibility provided by RAW format is key in ensuring that you can get it perfect in PP without loss of quality.
