Need some help. Dont know what i'm doing!

Ok, so i recently got a job with University Relations at my school. I have to do a shoot tomorrow at a diversity gala event. I'm using a nikon d70s because UR had a 80-200 f/2.8 lens and they wanted me to use their gear for this . They also gave me a speedlight SB-80DX to use with it, but i cant figure out how to make the flash work in some sort of auto mode. It seems like most of the modes dont work (i push the shuttter button and the little flash icon inside the viewfinder just flashes , but the camera wont take a picture)

does anyone have a quick answer to this? (or a long answer would work too i suppose)

The SB-80dx isn't compatible with the D70, what were they thinking? You're not going to get TTL with it, just manual mode.

You can't sneak in with your own gear?

well... i guess that would explain it.. haha. The guy uses mostly canon gear i think. i dont have real fast lenses, BUT, come to think of it, but i might actually bring my camera too and just use it for flash stuff..
