Need some input on the Sigma 70-200. Please HELP!!!!

I have a nikon d90 and looking to get a zoom lens. Obviously I can't afford the nikkor 70-200 so I am leaning towards the sigma 70-200f/2.8 ex dg apo os. not a new one but a used one. So this is where I need help. What should I look for to make sure the lens is ok. I have seen where people say it is "fungus free" but how do I check for that. Also does anyone own the sigma 70-200 and can share the pros and cons of this lens or a reliable site where I can review it? Any info on this lens is highly appreciate it. I found one for 800 bucks and am going to go see it. Obviously I will take my camera to test it out but I was wondering if there was anything specific I should be cautious about. Thank you in advanced.

Consider Nikon's 80-200 f2.8D instead. This is a top-grade, built-like-a-tank 'D' series lens. It doesn't focus quite as quickly as the 70-200, but optically, it's excellent. I've not used the Sigma, so I can't comment from that perspective.

Fungus isn't generally a concern in modern lenses, but it's easy to check for; simply shine a pen-light into the lens from both ends and look for "spider-web" like white threads, white-grey fuzz or similar odd-looking things inside the lens. Also smell the lens, carefully. If you detect any damp, or mildewy odour, be careful!
