Another option is to simply purchase a lens with a longer focal length. For instance; the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 55-200mm 1:4 - 5.6 G ED is a very nice lens for not a lot of money. The improved "reach" will be nearly 4x over the 18-55mm.

Look for a lightly used one at KEH, Adorama, or B&H, all reputable sellers.
