I've got about 300 pound to spend of a dslr camera. I've already got a fujifilm s220 exr but just fancy something a little more professional. Any suggestions? Thanks :-)

What are your primary objectives with this new camera? Do you want interchangeable lenses, do you want to make big enlargements, shoot at night?

Well I'm heavily interested in painting with light and car photography so a camera with a really long shutter speed would be best.

Any DSLR, and most higher-end point and shoot cameras will be able to accommodate that. I would suggest doing some research before hand to become more familiar with photography in genera. DP Review provides excellent reviews of digital cameras of all levels. I think that something like a Nikon D3000/3100/5000, or D80, Canon Rebel series, or the entry-level Pentax bodies would be the place to look.

Then you want a camera that has a 'Bulb' shutter mode, which is usually for shutter times of longer than 30 seconds.

So a bulb setting or bulb shutter right thanks :-) and that website us brilliant. I have heard nikon cameras are really good so ill try and get one of those!

You are going to have to buy secondhand for £300

yeah - likely second hand at that budget - I'd highly recommend popping into your nearest good camera shop, and trying a few cameras, that will give you an idea about which ones feel right in your hands. Tell them you wont be buying anything today, you're just checking out a few models and prices. If they are any good, they will be fine with this. That will at least give you a good starting point, and when you go hunting on ebay or somewhere else with second hand cameras you'll know which models the sellers are talking about/selling and how they feel/what they do.

I'm looking at either the nikon D3100 or D5100 and $ is a concern but also consider the long term investment. Also looked at the Canon T2i .

just pick a brand: nikon, canon or sony. Do you have friends that are photographers? What do they use? Can you borrow lens? Then go to ebay and order something.

sony a200 or a300
canon xs or xsi
nikon d200 or 3100

any of these are fine entry level dslr's in your price range.
