New camera for wife

Hi, I am looking to purchase a camera for my wife's b-day (saturday 8/11). It will be mostly for typical family photos. She does venture out and take photos of old barns,buildings and the countryside. I would like to stay under $350.00. She has said that she would like to start taking more photos and get a little more serious about photography so this may be a "starter" camera. I am totally camera illeterate so please help,

I think I'll go slightly away from the conventional answers on this one. Try looking into the Olympus epl-1. It's a mirror less interchangeable lens. It's a little old but I still se the kits sold new for about $250 or so. That'll give you $100 for lenses or other accessories. The m4/3 are a fairly nice system and I think good for those that maybe want to get slightly more serious about photography but maybe not want to go all the way into a Dslr system yet. With cheap adapters to the system you can run any type of lens and get some fantastic deals on old primes too

The Nikon D3000 is pretty cheap on Amazon right now. I would get her the body and then a 50mm f/1.8 or something similar.
