new d90 and more problems?

I just downloaded the manual from nikon... it looks like page 9, which references page 181 for the grid, talks about the grid that is always on. I know what this grid is, as I've turned it on and off. These lines only appear when I have the shutter button half way down and when the camera is focusing. Once focused, the lines disappear, along with the AF indicator boxes. Is there something that I am missing?
