New gear for Christmas.

I know that everyone probably had something on your list that you wanted and probably got for Christmas. I wasn't expecting anything but noticed that the Canon 85mm f/1.8 was on sale at B&H and my local camera store matched it for me. Since I was out with the kids and had my camera, I decided to try it out. I had been wanting this lens for portraits and to try on Basketball games. Here are a couple of images. They aren't great but it was sunny and harsh lighting. I did find some shade to take these in. Next up to get the flash out and work with it and this lens.

These were pulled from FB, so the quality is shot somewhat by that.

Not bad, you seem to feel comfortable with the focal length. Might be a little long or not flexible for a basketball game but maybe sitting half way up in stands will prove useful. In my experience (crop sensor), when on the floor, it can be feel uncomfortable when players are driving the net. However, you can get some interesting captures this way, especially knelt down or sitting.

Thanks JC. It wasn't too bad of a feeling. I'm starting to get more and more used to zooming with my feet. Thanks for the comments on the basketball. Since I shoot for the local paper, I can get on the endlines right on the court and sit down. I want to try it for the near court shots to see how it goes. I have tried my 50mm in the past and it was just too wide for me and I ended up cropping more than I would like to. I also use my 24-70 and my 70-200. So I have plenty of options, what I need is another body now to have a wide and a tele at the same time.
