New Lens.. what's causing this?

VC can only do so much. It's not a photography god with unlimited powers.

I was asking if the running engine somehow acts to screw up the VC system. Obviously the engine can introduce shake, but at 1/2000 I wouldn't have expected that to cause problems.

At 1/2000, you should not be using VC.

Next time you do it, use the focus override to bring the dock in focus.
or try the shooting through the side window, though rolled down (or outside of the car).
and no VC above 1/500.

In addition, there are heat waves around your car. If you want to shoot from the car...
1 engine off
2 shoot through a open window
3 make sure the wind is blowing in your face through the open window so the heat blows away from the opening..
4 don't shoot over marshes as they cause massive atmospheric distortion especially in the winter
5 make sure your subject is close
6 Turn off VC unless you are under 1/1000th. (I only turn it on under 1/500th)
7 lay a towel or beanbag on your window sill to help stabilize the lens
There are probably more things but that's a good start

In order to find out you need to do another shoot and experiment with different environmental differences to find out which issue or issues are involved. Obviously the group doesn't have a definitive answer. We will await your definitive answer.

Could you guys elaborate? Something with the VC system?

If your engine was running, and the lens/body was contacting any part of the car, this is just what I would expect to see as the engine is producing a high-frequency vibration that the VC system is not designed to cope with. In conjunction with all the other variables (windshield, haze, etc), I think you have your answer.
