Can others edit my Photos
Photos OK to edit
To find some local beginner photographers that are also charging money I check out the craigslist. I'm curious about what their level of skill is and what they offer for their services. I also just enjoy seeing photos, the good, the bad and the ugly.

So anyway one craigslist ad said "I have been a photographer for years and have been around photography my entire life as my father was a photographer also. Don't be fooled by the new cheaper, inexperienced photographers." Of course it was said with a bit of a snobby tone so I had to see the persons portfolio and see what amazing photos someone with that much experience produces!

This person is giving real professionals a BAD name. One, the attitude they have makes it seem like all pro's have this attitude but then to back it up with mediocre, at best, photos is unreal to me.

So is this a new tactic that newbies are using to make themselves look good?

Also I don't claim to be a good photographer, so don't bite my head off in that sense. I may be acting petty now but I do think it's not right to sell yourself as experienced when you're not, IMHO.

It's all marketing. Technically we've all "been around photography our whole lives", as anytime you look at an add or pick up a magazine you're "around photography". Hell, maybe she is counting her experience with p&S cameras (not uncommon). I have a girl in my area who lists herself as the areas "premier photographer" (she's not the only one either). Her website is close up pictures of her friends taken in her living room. Of course, thanks to the recent edition of "cutting edge professional photo editing software", she can now offer the "blurred background effect". Yep, you read that right.

It amazes me how many folks are so overwhelmed with, and spend so much time worrying about what other people are doing, insteaded of being worried about bettering themselves.

The free market will seperate the wheat from the chaff, but its up to you to decide what pile you want be in.

I would stop worrying about everyone else, and focus on making yourself better. This photographer's marketing will have exactly zero impact on your skill level.

(Yes, I do see the irony in this post. Priceless, isn't it?)

Weren't you one who was claiming how awful it was for people to be talking about and posting links to "bad" photographers?

I don't think I claimed she's a bad photographer. :) I said she said she's had experience for so many years and thus is more well deserving than 'newbies'. If you want to hire her, by all means go ahead. I just wondered if this is the standard level of skill professionals now have.. I mean she did say she's a professional, so therefore one would expect her photos to reflect that .. I never said she shouldn't be taking photos or is horrible. I posted a link because people would have asked for it anyway, give the people what they want jeweler, you should know that.

Yeah, you're right. Posting the link, then calling them out accusing them of being unethical, undeserving, and detrimental to the carrer of others is so very much better.

You know what?

She will be getting back links from your post every time someone clicks on that link you posted to her site. Those backlinks will lead her right here, to your thread.

was the link for the person in question?

Their site sucks. looks like a 3 year old made it and the photos are resized in awful ways that make them look worse then they probably all ready were.

Wow, this is what I LOVE about this forum: People who call other people out on photos, who have zero idea of what they are doing themselves. (Yes, I looked at your flicker site). Not saying it sucks, but you might want to refrain from throwing stones. All the best of luck to you, but leave others out of it. You don't sell deals based on who you think sucks. You sell deals based on YOUR ability.

Flame on!

Since this is already turning sour before page 2 and since I can't see any real benefit from yet another "Craglist photographers are bad" thread I'm locking this. I'm also removing the original link to the website in question simply to prevent the chance of any repercussions from this.

Now take all you're flames - stoke them up well - and push all that energy into some photos :)
