New to photography need recommendations.

Yeah the only problem is the motor thing, even though I don't know what that means yet! Would it hurt me in the long run the 5200? And the bundle seems cheap but it's gear Id have to order anyways as of now (at least the case, memory, some sort of tripod too haha)

And you buy it now.. and since it is junk, you throw it way and buy better gear! So why buy it in the first place.. it is a waste of money!

Can you borrow or even hire a camera to learn exactly what you really want?
Don't discount buying used equipment. If your budget is a little limited, then this can be the best way to get good quality equipment.

I'am leaning towards the bundle, is the lens that comes in that bundle decent at least? Because if the lens is no good, ill buy the camera, and then a used lens for the 5200. Will I be able to find used lenses for the 5200 on the newer model lenses that are compatible with the 5200?

The Nikon kit lens is a decent beginner lens... but the Sigma that comes in the one bundle is not worth buying. $144 new... Think about it... do you really think you can get a GOOD lens for $144.00?

If you really want a good long lens... skip the bundle, and buy the Nikon 70-300 I mentioned earlier.

You can find anything used.... yes.

The stuff in that bundle probably cost the seller less than 25% of the additional they are charging for it... as I said, JUNK! (But I suspect you don't know enough yet to realize that). Half of it you won't even use.. and the other half will either wobble, break or stop working. If you put your new body on that cheap tripod, and it falls over and breaks your new body and lens... what then?

Absolutly agree with you but I think many people dont feel comfortable buying used stuff which is good news for us who dont mind buying used, less competition cheaper the prices are.


Oh wait, wait, I also sell my stuff in the second hand market like kijiji and ebay so the more people buy used the bigger my chance is to get more for the stuff I sell.

I second that, get the 70-300mm VR and I put the enphasis on the VR version.
The 70-300mm has few versions and the one you want is the VR, the others are not as good.
A used one can be found for 300$ and even less, I got my 70-300mm VR for 280$ and I heard of a member of this forum that got his for around 220$ on ebay (the lucky guy).
It has the internal focusing motor so dont worry about it, it will work on your camera.
From all the new lenses Nikon sells today I think the 50mm 1.8D and 50mm 1.4D doesnt come with internal motor, I think there are few other prime lenses but as I said very few.
The lenses that has the model "D" doesnt come with its own motor and if you are not sure just ask the salesman or use here, we will be happy to share out knowladge.

xxarmando; I should explain why I don't like the package deals. Please note: I am writing from personal experience.

The tripod is cheap, and barely useful. The bag is way too small. I never use mine. The SD card is, well, you need one anyway, but not necessarily the 32GB. In other words, you end up paying a lot for semi-useful stuff.

NOW, if you can get a good discount on the camera and one lens, then the other stuff is just extra, just don't consider it being extraordinarily valuable.

I don't know this lens as I know the Nikon version of it but if this deal works for you then I say get it, if its this or D3200 I say get the better camera and in the future sell the lenses you don't like and get the lenses you do like.
The camera is very good and will serve for a while so better get the better one.
Read reviews on the Sigma and make your own mind.
