Newborn photography beginner

Hi everyone,

I want to start doing newborn photography and I’m not sure which lenses are best. I read a lot of stuff and I mostly found that you need a 35mm 1:1,4 and a macro.

I have a nikon d5600 and a 35mm but the 1:1,8 instead of 1,4. Would this lens also do the job?

As macro, many people say that I either don’t need one or if I really want one, the nikkor 105mm 2,8 is a good one.

I am really lost on this!! I hope you guys can help me decide.

The lens you have will be fine to start, let us see some results..................

I typically don't do people photography but I think lighting is far more important than the details of the lens you're using.

For portraits generally 50mm + is a good focal length.

35 mm on a crop could be argued that is “ similar to 50 mm on FF. 1.8 is fine, you’ll stop down for depth of field anyway.

If you want an excuse to get a 70-200 2.8 heres one from a shoot I did last weekend, your excused for GAS.

In my opinion a macro lens is not necessary. As was used above a 13 mm extension tube is plenty to get good close-ups with a wide variety of lenses both single focal length and zoom.

I've never used one but it goes in between the lens and the camera body, placing the lens farther away from the focal plane (essentially where the sensor is), the 13mm is how long the tube is. This allows you to get closer to your subject and still be able to focus on it.

Yes I believe a 13 mm extension tube could be used with pretty much any 35 mm prime. Personally I prefer to use an extension tube with lenses of 50 mm and longer in length, but I believe a 13 mm extension tube could be used with a 35 mm prime. That is about as short a lens as I would want to use for close-up photography

Nikon makes a very affordable 40 mm macro,which is more of a close-up lens than a true macro.

The 35 mm F1.8 lens is fine for people work. You do not I repeat you do not need the 35 mm F1.4 version, which is a very costly lens.A lens with an f/1.8
maximum aperture size is plenty good.

Yes, but you could tey it on a variety of lenses. It fets rather complicated, the math of macro, with a 13mm on 50mm lens its not true “1:1” and Ive no intention to figure it out.

I have no idea why someone would recommend a micro for portraits.

Babies are people, too, so what you're doing is portraits of people, regardless of their size. A smaller subject doesn't mean you have to get right in their face to fill the frame.

For portraiture (in general) I would recommend a longer lens than 35mm. So what if you have to step back a couple of steps? A longer lens has less distortion, so that is why many portrait photographers use lenses 85mm and longer.

By far, the most "improvement" over common snapshots is the use of well-placed lighting. Learn lighting, and your choice of lens will not matter much.

Could an expert using a 35mm lens make good portraiture? Yes, but he will probably also use two or three lights with modifiers.

I agree you do not need a macro. I'm one who does not like the macro detail shots of babies....I tend to think they are weirdly framed. I do take close ups if hands/eyes/feet using my 50mm. The 35 you have should work great for now, just be careful of distortion that sometimes happens with wide angle.

For me the mAcro shots were just close ups of the hands, you could get in there on the eyes or nose also. Its because CUTENESS, thats why.
