I am pretty fed up with my 18-55mm right now and was wondering what lense would be a good upgrade but not too pricey? I would like it to be fast and have a better zoom than this one.
I would like it to be a good all rounder.
Any ideas?
I was thinking the Tamron 75-300?

Keep in mind that the more zoom range a lens has the more likely it will be slow and not-so-sharp.

"All rounder" lenses have their compromises.

how about a wide angle? tokina 11-16 would be good. A kit lens is a pretty decent all arounder in its own right

Nikon 70 to 300 with VR isnt a bad lens but its not the greatest. I would imagine its a step up from the Tamron though.

Or very expensive and heavy!!!

A 50mm 1.8 is a good all around lens, but not for distance.

Its also Nikon, user is a Canon shooter :greenpbl:

If you want to replace your 18-55 and no plans on going full frame anytime soon, the Canon 17-55 is an awesome lens.

But you mentioned more zoom. More zoom and faster means more money.
Canon 24-70 f/2.8 more zoom and faster
Canon 70-200 f/4 IS more zoom and faster
Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS more zoom and faster
Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 more zoom and faster
Canon 50 f/1.8 much faster, prime lens

Would be my recommendations

Why are you fed up with it?

Thanks guys, most of those are out of my price range but the Tamron 28-75 is an option also the 50mm 1.8 i will have a good look into those two.
Thanks.

300mm is certainly a lot longer but you'll be missing wide for your 'Autos'..or will you still be using the 18mm for this?

This is good info for me as I plan to upgrade soon. But Hrry if you want an inexpensive "starter" zoom in addition to your regular lens, the one I have is pretty good. Its listed in my signature below.

55-250 hmm the price is perfect i will look into it now.
Cheers :D

I'm a newbie to DSLR, but FWIW...

We took pics at the beach last night. We used our 50mm f1.8 and also our 18-105 (kit lens for D7000). Consistently, our best photos were with the 50mm. This has been the case over the past two weeks really.

However, using the zoom lens I really enjoyed zooming in and out while taking pics. I zoomed in on the faces, then upper body, then full body, while subject was walking. So zooming is very versatile in that respect (my wife even got a dolphin rolling in the background once).

Sssooo, it depends on if you want quality or versatility. Since the 50mm for Canon is only $100, why not swing both?

Lots of recomendations of lenses but thus far no context to put them into.

First up you need to sit down and work out what it is - exactly - with the 18-55mm that is lacking in your view. You need to work out what it is you want from a lens (or lenses) before you can start to make informed choices between the market options.

This first stage gives you an objective (however simple or complex) and with that you can approach the market and have a look at the range of lenses on offer that will meet you requirements in part of in full. From there you can get an idea of the market spread in pricing on those lenses and from there you can make the choice of how much to spend. You can decide if you want to aim at a more budget option or you can decide that its best to save your money and go for a higher market option.
