I am new to photography and shoot a lot of surfing and waves but there are not always waves so I have been playing with night photography. It was overcast so I didn't get any stars but I may return and try again on a clear night.

Any tips and critique are greatly appreciated.

10 sec, f5.6 and iso 800

Why don't you try shooting at blue hour? (about half an hour-hour after sunset) you'll get some rich blue colour in the sky that will contrast nicely with the yellow lights and buildings.
I like that you cropped it as a wider shot, it was a good choice.

Thanks afoot. I wanted to try that too but it was overcast and that's why there is no sky in the photo. I am new to photography so sometimes I just can't wait until I get ideal conditions. Thanks again-

I would recommend shooting at the lowest iso. The noise in the first photo is very significant.

Hey Mike,

the great thing I there is a "blue hour" or "blue half-hour :P" even when its cloudy, it just happens a bit earlier then on clear nights.

Personally that one doesnt do alot for me, I think you would have been better off dropping the ISO to 100 or 200 and making the exposure up to 30sec also dropping the fstop to maybe 7.1 or 9? Not that im an expert but thats what I would have done, would have been less noisy.

Didn't know that afoot thanks i'll try it again. As for composition was that good? This way I will try everyone's suggestions on the same shot and see if it turns out better. Thanks-
