night shots

Hi. I can never really get my night shots to work out the way I see it in my eye and i'm not to sure how to capture what I see. I'm using a d70 and was just wondering what settings are best? When my shutter is really slow my pictures come out redish.

I really love the night and wish I could capture it the way it is. Not make it look like i'm in a hellish inferno.

Could you show us an example? The reddish tint probably has to do with incandescent lighting. If there are low-level clouds covering the sky in a heavily lit area they come out orange. Try changing your white balance to incandescent.
