Night, Stars, and Mountains

I want to try to make a time lapse of the stars with Mt. Rainier in the background. I imagine a night with full moon would be the best way to capture both the stars and mountain, but is there anything I can do to increase my success on a night without much light? Last time the mountain was still visible, but mainly just an outline...

Forum member Sw1tchFX does that kind of photography and is in Portland, but he does long exposures, not time lapse.
