Nikon 24-70 2.8 worth buying for a DX camera?

I have a D7100 that I have been playing around with. Right now I mainly am doing car photography and some friends told me to look into a 24-70 2.8 since that would help for that. Only thing im wondering is with the DX changing the focal length of the lens would it be worth it. Alot of car events I do can be indoor where not much light is such as museums or personal collections and not always is flash allowed which is one reason why i am looking at this lens since its fast and has good low light ability. Just wondering if anybody has used this lens on a DX camera and if they though it was a good one to use for it.

If you are doing car photos I'd have thought that the 24-70mm would not be wide enough at the 24mm end of its zoom as the angle of view of a 24mm lens on a DX body is the same as a 35mm lens on a FX body.
Probably something like the Nikor 17-55mm f/2.8G or the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 would be a better choice for your D7100.

This does not happen. The view angle (not the same thing) changes but the focal length stays the same. Out of the five lenses I use on my D40, only one is a DX lens.

I kind of agree with Alex. I would have thought that you would want a wider angle lens for car shows. I don't do cars but, a quick google search did leave me with the impression that a wider lens weeks to be used more often than not. Anyway, if you do decide with the wider angle lens, another lens to consider would be the Tokina 11-16 2.8. It's for DX and it gives nice results plus, it's not as much as the 24-70 2.8 Nikon.

All that said, I own the 24-70 2.8 Nikon and it almost never comes off the camera. I absolutely love it.

I debated between the 24-70 and the 17-55. I went with the 17-55. It's as great of a lens as the 24-70, but it gives me wider shots on my crop sensor. If you have plans on jumping to ff in the future, the choice would obviously be the 24-70, because the 17-55 would vignette on the ff.

Used my Nikon 24-70mm 2.8G for a whole year on my D7100 and got wonderful results, love the lens and loved how well it worked on the camera but if you find it to be too expensve I guess as mentioned above you can also look into fast DX lenses like the 17-55mm 2.8 and 17-50 2.8
If you see yourself anytime in the future moving to FX then dont bother with DX lenses and just go with a 24-70mm 2.8

24 is too tight in crop frame for most indoor car shows. You'll be backing up into other cars repeatedly. The 24-70 is an awesome lens. Incredible. But not as your only lens for indoor car shows on a crop frame.

On a crop frame I usually do three lenses, an 11-16 tokina f/2.8, a crop body 18-55 kit lens and tamron 60mm f/2 macro. Make the first sweep with the tokina for those dramatic wide angle shots that really emphasize the length and curves of the cars. Then a round with with kit lens 18-55 to get normal view style shots. Then finally a round with the macro lens for any small detail shots I made a note of in my earlier two sweeps of the room.

Thanks everyone for the comments. I should have mentioned I have the Tokina 11-16 2.8. Just sometime get to that 16 mark and need to get closer but some cars are roped off so cant get closer. I have though of the 17-55 since it will fit good in there but I do plan to go ff in the future just not the near future. Other reason I though of the 24-70 is Im helping a friend with an online car magazine that is coming back from the past and I plan to do some racing events during the day and night and from other car photographers I see that is a popular lens. Will see how the first couple months go with car events and see if I can see a use for the lens. I do also plan to keep my 7100 as a back up camera when i get a ff so maybe get the 17-55 for now and then when i make some money from the car magazine i cant put it towards a ff and the 24-70 then
