Equine photographer...

The d700 appeals more to me but which one do you prefer and why? Only looking for reviews on d600 and d700, that's all. Thanks.

D700.

Better AF module, the entire chassis is metal, more exposure brackets (9), up to 8 fps with the right accessories, 10-pin connector, PC sync cable port (for flash), 1/8000 shutter, X-flash sync at up 1/320.

I hopped on the D700 because I was already spoiled by the build/heft/size and controls of the D300. It was an easy move for me.
I held the D600 and it felt just didn't have that "tank" like build.

I had a D7000 and switched over to a D700, and it did, comparatively, feel like a tank. However, I'd become so used to the D7000's button layout and menu structure that I found the D700 somewhat frustrating (totally a me issue). So I returned the D700 and got a D600 and have loved using it. I say all if this as a roundabout way of asking the OP "what body are you currently using?" I'd also ask whether you're using the camera for indoor or outdoor equestrian photography. Both cameras are great (though Thom Hogan does say the D600 is an upgrade from the D700), and I don't think you could go wrong with either.

I tested both before getting the d600 .. being a novice though at camera comparisons.

I really wanted the d700 but the few things that held me back ...
- no video - I use it once in a while
- 12mp vs 24mp (and d600 newer Expeed processor)
- base 200 ISO d700 vs 100 ISO for d600. Both have lower ISO available but 600 still lower)
- Dynamic Range (thought I never tested it I think the d600 has an edge at the bottom and top from what I"ve read)

There were a few other things that I can't think of, but I really liked the d700 to what they said above, but bought the d600.
I was torn .. but I really needed Video and wanted above 16mp. If the d700 was 16mp .. might have been a different story.

FWIW, Even though I started with a d7000 and also have a d600 .. I still preferred the button layout of the d700. lol

I believe the OP is using a d5100 .. so the menu structure & layout is totally different.

I would take a fabled D710 over a D600/610 if it meant the same sensor + everything that KmH mentioned, and no video.

then D600 it is ;)

I agree, the D700 was certainly a tank of a body. Nikons most defined work horse in my opinion. However, if you're comparing the tech in the two cameras, the D600/D610 takes it.

In this case, I would go with the newer D610.

Given the grief they've caused, why the D600--assuming you could find one?

The D610 replaced it.

Can anyone explain to me, why an amateur needs a "built like a tank" body? It is so heavy and designed for a heavy everyday use and abuse i.e. for a professional shooter. An D610 will get outdated sooner than an average amateur photographer will be able break it.

I am really surprised sometimes, because an extra weight is the price that the pros have to pay , but amateurs? Every time I pick up a D610 or D7100 I think, no way, it is ridiculously big and heavy. Why do amateurs buy even heavier bodies is beyond me. More exposure brackets? Give me a break..
