Nikon P3 Face Priority AF not working well.

I have a Nikon P3, I don't know if anyone else is having this problem. When using the Face detection mode in the camera, it doesn't seem like it works very well. 9 out of 10 times it will not be able to pick up faces and it will just focus like normal. I thought that was normal, but once in a while I would see it picked up faces and put a box around the face; but rarely would it do this. Is my camera defective or is anyone having a similar problem. Thank you.
