How many are thinking of making the jump? I've been tossing around the idea of selling my 1.8 for the 1.4... $500 is kind of steep though for my current wallet

I've been eyeing a 50mm 1.4 for several months, now I can finally make up my mind between the olf Nikon AF 50mm, the Sigma 50mm and the new Nikon AF-S 50mm.
I really like that they kept the lens relatively small (meaning that they didn't make a monster like the Sigma 77mm filter lens - I'm not saying it's bad, just quite big). Nano-Coating and other extras might have been fine, but it would probably just push the (already slightly too high) price even further. It's size, along with the AF motor might be a nice asset to the D40/60 owner.

I will expect a very good smooth bokeh since it has 9 blades round aperture.

this lens was due for renewal... they way nikon has been going lately i'm sure it will somehow optically smoke the already decent 1.4.... the nano coating will keep light from bouncing around inside and the afs will improve focusing which can be important @ 1.4

About time they made a 50 that could actually AF with the D40/x/60.

I think I'll end up getting the old f/1.8 AF-D... I just can't justify spending £200 more on this one. Loss of AF and it is a tiny bit slower, but it shouldn't make a difference.

I was planning on dropping $500 on the Sigma - was actually thinking about it last night, since for those that want to keep on using their D40x for travel but have a D700, this makes the most sense. . . they are def filling the gap, and I'm stoked about it!

I'd hold out on dropping $$$ on it though - I bought the 18-55 VR when it first came out at $189, and it's retailing for about $109 now; I would imagine the price on this prime should stabilize around $349 by mid-2009?!

all of which work backwards with my current D40x (except the 35mm, unless they update it!)

I would think they would digitally optimize all of their primes since it appears the industry is slowly moving back to full frame...

Don't forget, this is a "G" lens... that means that on a DX camera, its closer to a 75mm than a 50mm.

I can see this being a nice lens for the FX contingent, though!

I have the 30mm F/1.4 Sigma, 50mm F/1.8 Nikon, and the Nikkor 85mm F/1.4, so this lens would be kinda somewhere in the middle for me, and not what I need at this time.

I think jerry meant to say it was an "FX" lens and not a "DX" lens...
