No craigslist biters, wait patiently?

I have been enjoying my Nikon D750, Tamron 15-30, Sigma 150-600, and other stuff lots. I really enjoy doing landscape photography, and the occasional family candid portraits and whatnot are fun. Nature photos are awesome when eagles are out. But... I'm looking to downsize.

My reasoning is the D750 has been a toy for me, and I have learned about what I like and don't like to shoot. I eventually want to downsize to a smaller camera, with a smaller ultrawide angle lens. I want to be able to keep my camera in my car, and not worry as much about things getting stolen. I believe for most of my purposes, I will be able to achieve similar landscape photos with a smaller sensor.

I also need money because there are other purchases I need to prioritize.

This long-winded post is brought to you because some of you may remember how much I've bought, sold, and purchased new things over and over.

The question after the pre-amble:

I am hoping to get $1400 (Canadian dollars) for my Tamron 15-30, plus the 10-stop lee sw-150 filter, plus the Haida 150-series filter holder for the Tamron 15-30. Do you think that's a realistic asking price? It's a very particular sale, since ultrawide is one thing, and then a filter system is a whole extra niche.

I am hoping to get $1800 (Canadian dollars) for my Nikon D750, plus the extra battery that came with it. Is that a realistic asking price as well?

I know my 85mm 1.8G and SB-750 will be easy to sell. I will be keeping my 50mm 1.8G and Sigma 150-600, and I'll move down to probably a used D7100. I'll eventually acquire a used ultrawide angle lens.

The other question:

Are there any foreseeable price drops (or even price hikes with Trump coming in haha... jeez...), that I should be aware of? I don't want to wake up in 1 month and find out that the Tamron 15-30 hit a price drop of $400, leaving me f'd. I am lucky enough that I acquired the camera and lenses when prices were lower in Canada (better exchange rate 1+ years ago).

If I can't recoup about what my asking prices are, I'll probably keep the gear. I still use the gear, and love the gear.

I haven't seen your CL ad, but have you posted multiple ads? Hit the cities that are reasonably close, advertise each item separately, include photos, and have patience.

Also place ads on here in the buy and sell forum.

BTW: I think you're silly for trading down to a D7100 as they aren't much smaller than your D750, and you'll be losing so much money that I don't understand why you're considering the purchase of another camera. just sell everything, and if you are still wanting a camera, get a used P&S so you're not out so much money.

I remember hopping in the car of a good friend back around the end of the film days and he had a Nikon F sitting on the backseat. I asked about it and he said that was his beater camera that he just kept in the car, wasn't worried if it was stolen and it held up to all the abuse.

Today, if you want to throw a camera in the car then just buy an older DSLR like the D300 (I have a D200 in the car). You still have to keep it out of site as a broken window can cost more that what another one of these cameras go for.

When pricing used equipment what I recommend is you go on ebay and search the listings that sold - if you enter your search terms then click on advanced, under advanced click on sold listings.

Even if your not selling on Ebay it will give you a good idea as to what an average used price is for selling that type of equipment. It also eliminates any pie in the sky listings that didn't sell because they were ridiculously over priced.

Also keep in mind that craigslist is a much smaller audience than Ebay, so it may not sell as quickly or generate as much interest because fewer people will see or really be interested in your ad.

CL is ridiculous in my market. People are asking top dollar for stuff. The last reasonable ad I seen was for a lens, I met up with the individual and it was in terrible condition. He argued with me and couldn't see the fungus, which was so apparent, didn't even need a flashlight to see it. I still look but mostly given up on CL. The new thing is ridiculous low prices on an item, no CL respond links, just email address that scams you to qbids.

Pretty similar story for CL in my area - when you do see stuff in photo equipment it's ridiculously overpriced, People want 90-95% of what they paid new for a camera they bought 5 or more years ago.

Tons of scams out there too - so I really don't do CL anymore myself. I have put a few things up for sale in local FB groups but not much success there either at least for camera equipment, too small a market in the local area, just not enough interested buyers.

So on the rare occasion I do sell it's mostly here, or Ebay - I don't sell stuff all that often but not a huge fan of selling on Ebay. You take a big hit in fees and the shipping thing is kind of a hassle. Unfortunately though it's pretty much the only game in town a lot of times.

The Tamron 15-30 with the filters is pretty specialized and may take time to sell. For that reason I wouldn't let the D750 go until the Tamron was sold - unless you would be happy using the Tamron on a 7100.

I sold a few things on craigslist at very fair just slightly below the average eBay selling prices based on condition. After I weeded out all the crazies and there is a lot of them,I found a serious strong buyer for each item I have sold. In my experience leaving a contact number a serious buyer will always call and waste no time to set up a meet or text . The texting and emails back a forth with no mention to check an item out is always BS or a scam. I sold a Mint Canon 60D from craigslist the man came in from the city - New York by train over an hour In. The transaction went smoothly especially for him as I priced it about $100.00 less then the trending price. It may take time to sell stuff on CL and sometimes the ad may need a renewal run. I sold my sigma 150-600 after the ad nearly ran out,just so happens the guy that purchased it was looking for this lens used at that time I sold it for a good price.

On the other side, I've purchased several items from Craig's List, and I've gotten a great deal on each one. As with eBay, you need to have eyes wide open, weeding out the wackos.

I found a mint condition Nikon F6 for about $250 below market. The guy had been trying to sell it for three months, and had come down $300 from his original price. A similar deal was had on a Nikkor 50mm f1.4 AF-D. I also acquired a mint condition Sekonic meter to use as a back-up for my Mamiya Pro TL.

Craig's List has somewhat limited exposure because things are so "local", less exposure than eBay, but it's a great source, and patience on the seller's part is mandatory.

CL in my area is very low priced for the items sold, but all are used items. I recently saw a used 750 for 900.00.
I stay away from any used items that the owner does not have an original sales receipt for.

Seems I have too many people interested in my D750 at $1800 (selling with an extra Nikon brand battery, so that must be enticing).

No one wants the 15-30 with the D750.

So I have to decide whether or not to part with the D750 now, and sell the 15-30 later...

And... every time I try to respond to a seller to say anything, I can't get myself to click "send". I'm not getting out to take photos enough, I'm just not. I don't use my camera enough. But every time I think about downsizing / getting rid of what I've got, I think to myself "get out there and take more photos and keep your camera". But I do need a new Macbook Pro laptop (for studies & work), and a slightly less powerful camera would be excellent to edit on it.

I'm tormenting myself.

Put another way, D750 prices aren't likely to rise(especially if Nikon rolls out a refresh in early 2017)and Macbook Pro prices aren't likely to crater.

Freeing up cash for other purposes is one thing but upgrade-itis seems epidemic around here. Priorities...

I have downgrade-itis right now, if we're talking only about cameras/lenses. It's something similar to upgrade-itis once you factor in what I want to do with the money.

I've seen what a D750 with a Tamron 15-30 can do. It's wonderful. Sharpness is great. Color rendition is wonderful. Recovery of shadows and highlights is superb, allowing me to play with photos that have boring light and make them interesting.

But, I also now know how much I can really do with less. Plus, 150x150 square filter systems are the biggest pain in the ass. I underestimated the benefit of cheaper circular ND filters.

If I sell my D750, 85 1.8G, SB-750, and 15-30, and I get all my asking prices (totalling $3900), that still wouldn't cover the price of acquiring an UWA DX lens ($600), D7100 ($800 on a deal), and 15-inch MBP ($3300 after tax).
