I made sure my camera is made in Japan. SX10 IS soon to be! There is no quality control in China, just mass production. It is also bad in this country too as far as cars. This is why Camry is no longer #1!
And yes, I made sure my Vin #'s always started with a J!

What is the best P&S under 200 bucks? We have a Canon A630 and soon to be SX10 IS in the household. We just need a compact camera to travel with that takes nice photos.

canon sd1100is or 1200is ..... if you can get your hands on the 1100 its worth it .... the 1200 is great but it will run u 200. id spend the xtra cash for the 780. its 250 but it has hd video and its tiny

I will believe a company like Canon or any big name like that when they move the manufacturing plant or final assembly site to China, they will have some kind of control.

Is it hard for a company to control the quality of the product they produce if they want to in Japan? What about in China?

They don't want to make a poor product, obviously - their goal is to have the best product on the market.

I haven't seen the numbers to prove it, but I'd be willing to bet that the QC in China is not the same as it was in Japan.

There are only two ways to increase the profit margin. Two - that's it.

Increase sale price, or reduce manufacturing cost.

Yes, there are always ways to manufacture a product less expensively - usually it involves cutting a few corners. Whether or not those corners matter, well - that's for you to decide.

Yes, excatly. When a company want to increase the profit margin of a product. They cut corners. And a good QC increase production cost. They just need to find a balance point. It's because they cannot make a bad product to damage their name. They spend A LOT of money to market the name Canon, I am sure they do not want to damage it.

Also, I also think (may not be true) most of the companies in Japan do not want to mess up the image of quality product from Japan. When they need to make a less quality product (lower cost?), they will try to make the finial assembly point in China. So it will be Made in China instead of Japan. Again, that is just what I think, don't take my words for it.

I think it's one of those things that can never be proven or disproven, but it makes damn good sense. It wouldn't surprise me at all.
