So what's the deal with all these Walmart workers complaining and threatening to go on strike Thanksgiving day because they have to come into work. BOO HOO!!!! I will be working in the emergency room at the hospital like I do for a good amount of holidays, weekends, some nights, and alot of other crap hours, because we don't CLOSE! If it wasn't for the other amazing nurses, doctors, and healthcare workers that I am surrounded by on a daily basis, your Walmart AS.. would not have access to care when it might be your time to go into cardiac arrest after your Thanksgiving meal! So stop complaining about having to cut your Thanksgiving day short and be thankful you will have the next holiday to celebrate!

I think there's more to the story. I know a lot of Walmart employees are complaining about the way the company treats them. I had a client (counseling) who worked for Walmart, and he had his hours reduced because he didn't want to transfer to a different department for less money. Plus, the employees are unable the healthcare that Walmart supplies on what they are making.

That aside, they bought into working on black Friday and Thanksgiving when they started working in the industry they work in. When I ran the restaurant I had to work EVERY HOLIDAY (including Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years Eve, Easter, etc) because we were in a resort. I had to suck it up. Needless to say, after 5 years working in and managing hotels and restaurants, I realized how important these days were to me and finished my degree for psychology.

I totally understand where you are coming from and wayyyy back when I was young enough to do it I worked in a nursing home as a CNA. I always volunteered to work on the holidays. THe pay was awesome and I really liked it. I still got to spend time with my family-before or after my shift-and I liked it.
However... the stores... I am not impressed with the stores moving black Friday up.
Back in the day I remember when stores COULDN'T be open on Sunday or they paid a fine for it. Holidays were much the same.
Now they're open 24/7 and nothing is sacred.

When you work for a company you should be fully aware of what you are getting yourself into. Walmart has had a bad reputation for a while now. I don't think it is funny that people are treated poorly at all, but I do believe that the employees have to take some ownership in their employment choices.

I think most of the Wal Mart employees are not there exactly by CHOICE. They're there because it's the job they have. The one that they could find when there was nothing else.
That's kind of like punishing the poor for being poor, isn't it?

Yeah, I can agree that opening on Thanksgivings for the "black friday" sales is a little extreme and really does change the tone and tradition of it. I was just stunned when I was watching the news and I saw these Walmart employees complaining because, "they would be missing quality time with their families!" I wanted to scream to them HELLLOOOO we do this all the time and never complain. Yes, we are highly compensated but we give up alot as well.

Completely agree with MLeek. Many of them are there just because it was the only job they could find. In my area, it's one of the few places that are actually hiring, so if you need a job, that's where you're forced to go. We've had multiple companies close up and move overseas lately, my mom was even forced out of work, the only jobs around here are service industry mostly (the Poconos, huge tourist area) or retail. Walmart being the biggest and easiest to get into aside from McDonald's.

Why is this being discussed here??? You seem to be upset that these folks are complaining. Walmart is not a hospital and their being open is purely greed on their part. Let the "associates" enjoy a day with their families. Quit whining.

I'll concede that some of those people are there not by their choosing. But it is retail and that is their biggest time of the year. I wouldn't want to work it either but it's work it and keep my job or find something else. Look at the 15,700 that used to work for Hostess that thought it would be a good idea to strike. Some of them will probably rather work the evening of thanksgiving rather be out of a job. As Kathy said, there are others that don't get any of the day off.

You do what you have to do to make a living.

As someone who was unemployed for almost a year, I would have a little gratitude for even having the opportunity to work those bad hours/days. Just my opinion.

When I worked retail I ALWAYS worked the holidays and it was not by choice. Its how retail has to work to compete, if you dont like it get a different job. If you cant get a different job, suck it up buttercup.

Even now I work IT and am essentially on-call 24/7 365 because we provide a service to customers that is available every day of the year. Do I complain about this? Nope because its the nature of the job and is expected.

Oh yeah, now I remember. The Holiday Spirit.

I'm thankful that I am earning a reasonable income.
I'm thankful to those who will be working so that I can dispose with some of that reasonable income.
I'm thankful that I am drawing breath.
I'm thankful that most of those people that are important to me are doing likewise.
I'm thankful that I still laugh.
But most of all, I'm thankful for bacon.
