This is being discussed here because I started a thread in the "off topic chat" about it that's why. This forum can be for non-photography related topics. If I want to discuss something and you don't care to discuss it then don't. Simple as that.

They should be somewhat grateful they have a job. I'm not saying its a dream job but it beats unemployment.

I'd rather be away from my family and be able to provide for them than the alternative.

When you work for a company you should be fully aware of what you are getting yourself into. Walmart has had a bad reputation for a while now. I don't think it is funny that people are treated poorly at all, but I do believe that the employees have to take some ownership in their employment choices.

I think most of the Wal Mart employees are not there exactly by CHOICE. They're there because it's the job they have. The one that they could find when there was nothing else.
That's kind of like punishing the poor for being poor, isn't it?

Completely agree with MLeek. Many of them are there just because it was the only job they could find. In my area, it's one of the few places that are actually hiring, so if you need a job, that's where you're forced to go. We've had multiple companies close up and move overseas lately, my mom was even forced out of work, the only jobs around here are service industry mostly (the Poconos, huge tourist area) or retail. Walmart being the biggest and easiest to get into aside from McDonald's.

Yeah, when you have limited options it is probably best to take what you can get especially if there aren't very many jobs available. You certainly couldn't choose based on benefit options and pay. Not only that, but it would also be job security because Walmart isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

My POINT was alot of us have to work on holidays ALL of the time, so why would it constitute a strike and make national news that Walmart workers would have to come in at 8pm on Thanksgiving to serve their retail customers on the busiest shopping week of the year in the weakest economy we have had in decades. It wasn't about shoving an enema up someones ass versus buying a freaking Wii. I was just using my job as an example of something that is open 24/7 that serves the people.

In the ER? You better believe it. Any patient that comes in and needs emergency surgery, we need to clear everything out of them quickly if you know what I mean. Okay, I get your point and I understand this viewpoint as well.

I think the biggest point that is being missed is that their choosing a date that will most screw Walmart. 'You don't want to pay a decent wage that will be able to afford a living as well as health insurance? Fine, I will strike on the one day that will hurt you.' I really think that there is more to the story than "just having to work instead of spending time with my family" there's a lot more to the Walmart story that isn't getting attention. And I think that's the main reason for the strike. Employees shouldn't be treated unfairly because the only job that is available to them is at Walmart. People should be valued as employees no matter where they are. People need to be respected and treated as human beings. No one should have to choose between eating or health insurance. Or be forced into taking lower paying positions, or risk retaliation. I'm really not sure this is just about having to work on Thanksgiving, but that's the only point anyone is currently paying attention to.

The stores will still open and throngs of needy, gotta have it first, sniveling trash will be lined up with their grande mocha non-fat soy lattes warming their chilled hands from a night in the cold. Oh wait...I got off on a tangent. Kathy, you signed on to these hours and your compensation package reflects that. If things change, I bet you would want your compensation to reflect that. Walmart employees did not sign on to this. Last year they were not being asked to work Thanksgiving day. Apparently other things have changed as well. So, if your entire industry started to change the rules and started asking for more and more and for you to accept less and less what would you do? Yes, we've all heard all the squawking by healthcare professionals. Well BOO HOO nurses, doctors, and healthcare workers, suck it up because management's making changes, so they can be even more profitable. Hmmmmm, me thinks you would be singing a different tune if it was happening to you. You might want to come down off of your high horse and look at this from both sides.
