What's new

Oh, now this is FUNNY!

Um, I liked your previous post. ^^ Nice to see that you've come around. : )

Maybe with all this free time that you have you can start by fixing some of the typos on your website and work on your focus.

I learned things from this discussion that I did not get from the five minute CNN segment that I watched regarding this issue.
This is a problem we all face today. Making judgements based off too little information. It's not entirely our fault. We can blame the media. They media may be responding to it's consumers needs. I have learned to read as much as I can, from as many sources as I can, about issues before making judgements.

It's difficult to remain informed.

In the words of Sweet Brown..."Ain't nobody got time for that!"

Yes, I would have to agree.

jobs change. we get jobs, some of us hope it is a career, and we expect (hope really) that when the job changes, it will be a positive one.
such is not always the case. in my job, raises have been on hold for years. YEARS. as have many in my field, including a lot of the city and county fire departments. my company has taken several day trucks off the road to save money, putting a much bigger burden on the 24hr shifts. a typical shift for me now is maybe 4 hours of sleep in a 24 hour period. last shift was 2 hours. just a few years ago, it was 5-6 hours. we have endured overtime blackouts during our busiest times meaning less trucks running more calls, payraise freezes, having to work with older equipment until it literally falls apart, and being run into the ground almost every shift. Do i ***** about it? hell yea i do. me and my partner ***** every shift. but every shift we do the SAME THING. we get to the station, clock in, and DO OUR JOBS! every shift, without fail. and we do it to the best of our abilities no matter what crappy conditions we are under. even though we see its more and more piled on us every year with no extra compensation. Its not the most glamorous job, its not the best paying job, its probably not the most satisfying job, and there really isn't a whole lot of room for advancement...but its MY JOB. its what I do, and its all I've got. it provides me a paycheck every two weeks that never bounces. it provides insurance for us, and our special needs child, and it allows my wife to photograph a handful of weddings and portrait sessions every year without worrying if it will be enough to pay for our child's medication and medical expenses. life is tough all over right now. get a helmet and tough it out, or get run over by someone who will.

I am a medical worker.

I feel for you and all medical workers as they get constantly screwed by state and federal decisions. Our state has done it's damnest to try and bankrupt all our hospitals by not paying medicare.

It's a different story when you work for a souless big corporation like Walmart who makes money hand over fist. They have the money to give raises and to give decent benefit packages by they choose to **** over the working joe.

admittedly , medical fields are in a slightly different situation because we are dependent on medicare/medicaid/insurance paying the bill or the company has to eat the cost of the ride. I don't know the financial specifics of my company, but if anyone thinks just because paramedics, or RN's have some schooling behind them, they have an easier time finding work right now, they would be mistaken. the competition is unbelievable. schools are pushing out firefighters, emts, medics, and nurses like an assembly line, promising a huge job market in the ever expanding medical field.
all I DO know, is that i am grateful I have a job. and until such time that i decide i want a different job, and actually HAVE another job...im going to do my job how the company wants, and by their rules. anything else puts my family at risk. as for the wal-mart people, there are many many companies that hire with nothing but a high school diploma, and are closed on holidays. I am just as "stuck" as they are, but I choose to do what i have to do to provide for my family. its the same choice everyone else has.

Just a little something I ran across today. There are down sides to evey job. Don't dwell on them. Be happy for what you have. Especially if your healthy and employed.

The only thing that would stop retailers from opening early, is if consumers do not go to their stores. It's so competitive that most of the retailers will follow along. If they do not, they risk their financial stability.
Remember that Walmart is a publicly traded company. It responds to the expectations of its shareholders. Many retirement funds invest on Walmart Stock and people may not even realize they are.
Retail is a tough business to be in when trying to achieve work-life balance.

Great discussion, all. If we can continue to show respect for one another's opinions, and personal situations, we can keep this thread open. I don't want to read any more snarky comments lobbed at each other, though. :) I don't know of anyone who doesn't feel pinched, in some form or other, these days. So let's buck each other up rather than tear each other down, especially here on an internet forum where it's free to be nice, and at least we're seated while typing and not running like crazy to make ends meet.

Carry on!
