right side of the picture has too much black in it for me

I agree with the above comment. A little bit of lighting on the far right wouldn't hurt. There's too much empty space.

Yes, the blacks are too black. I'm guessing if you were to hover over the right side in photoshop, you'll get mostly zeros. You need some reflection of the main light back on the right side to show some shadow detail.

I'm of the opinion that cutting off the top of the head is NOT a bad thing. However, you should have the full chin for us to see.

You've obviously setup for split lighting, but I think you have positioned the main light too far around rather than level with the subject's ear. Notice how the shadows are playing on his face. Bringing the main back towards the camera slightly should aleviate the shadows in the corner of his eye, on the tip of his nose and the cheek line. It also seems the light is too hot since there are quite a few white areas.

Your father has very intersting facial characteristics, you just have to find the best way to show them in a photo. You should definitely keep trying.

thanks foor the useful replay. yea the setup was tha camera on one hand and the flash gun in the other ... i did not plan for this shot alot to be honest i was just testing the trigger . thaanks

I've had a second thought.....

The total black on his left side could work if there was additional lighting on the background for separation and to make the right side frame less weighted (heavy).
