When I am taking photos of myself for practice, I take my glasses off...I think in the first, that was part of the issue...the glasses and hair are in a similar plane, but the eyes are not. Autofocus may get the specs again. But nice light.

not using auto focus on myself. I set focus and switch it off (put on M) and shot both with and without glasses. I liked it with glasses better.

yeah, focus is off? Hard to nail the focus when I don't have something to put in the chair, I set it as close as I could on a teddy-bear, then set focus mode to Manual. Is there a trick?

Shoot at f16 and adjust lighting accordingly. Its almost impossible to miss the focus.

It's your glasses frame. It is blocking part of your right eye and your eyelashes on both eyes. Keeps drawing me there. Self portraits are hard to do. I have to take a lot of photos to get a good one. Don't have the laptop system, but that would be a good setup to have.

maybe i'm missing something, but what's the advantage of manual focus for a situation like this? it seems to me that there'd be too many variables even with a focus dummy.

Ml-l3 and iif you are using a d700- the ml-3 works well.

Oh, I have a remote shutter release, with focus ability. It's just getting in the right position for the focus point that's the issue.

I have the ml-l3 and it works. If you have something to place in your place to know where your camera is pointed, then hit the shutter release when you are in its place, it will focus. Nice comp and lighting btw
