What's new

OMG, OMG, OMG I have been so insulted...

HE HAS DREADLOCKS!!!!!

So if the cording isn't natural... what do they look like WITHOUT it?!

::runs to Google::

well they do naturally cord. But if not maintained it will look just like big massive mats and not the beautiful cords/dreadlocks. You have to split the mats as they form and after baths etc.

You can also cord standard poodles...google that ;)

I seriously don't know how the lovely Komondor could make that list! If you're going to choose a dog, how could you say this one is uglier than the Chinese Crested?

The poor Chinese Crestesd needs a break after winning the Ugliest Dog contest for the last 10 (?) years...

We either have a language problem or my Mop was weird. Mop's hair just turned into one giant matted mess and I cut it into cords with both scissors and a straight razor. As the cords got longer it became easier to maintain because the new hair wouldn't mat as much since it wasn't as exposed to dirt.

Now paigew, you probably are the exception, but I never was very happy with groomers in the US. Not one of them I met was able to tell me what to do with my Mop. I can understand that since they are fairly rare. But when I asked them how they groomed a Schnauzer, they always said they shaved it and it is the worse thing you can do to them. I don't know if it is because they didn't know any better or thought nobody would want to pay for the time to do it correctly but I'm glad my parents had a Schnauzer when I was a kid and I learned then to take care of one.

Over the years I've learned to take care of my dogs myself no matter how long it takes :)

is this the same type of dog?

this is a beach dog. he lives on sosua beach in the dominican republic. no one actually owns him. but he never leaves the beach. strolls up and down among all the shops, bars and restaurants. i took this of him back in 2008. but he's still there, being fed daily by the tourists..

i've had him out swimming with me and jogging up and down the beach a few times over the years.

don't know what kind he is. but it's the only dog i've ever seen with dreadlocks!! well... until now !!!

well I haven't ever corded a dog, but from what I know the hair changes and starts to cord during adolescence...they get the coat change from the fluffy hair to the coarse curly hair. The hair will mat and you must separate the mats to form the dreads. It is best to do this regularly, you should be able to split the mats with your hands if you keep up with it (as the mats first start to form). If it gets to be too matted I suppose you would have to use scissors to split them.

That definitely looks like a Puli. It comes from the same part of the world and looks exactly the same except for being about "half" the size of a Komondor and being black.

My Mop (a male) was about 125 pounds. A Puli female is supposed to average around 25 pounds.

Be honest though... 100lbs of that is all hair.

:lmao:

I thought about breaking it down into hair and rest of the dog but I have no real idea. But I do imagine the weigh of the hair is substantial even if not quite a 100 lbs.

If you consider what the dog was meant to be/do, protect herds from bears, and that the hair is his armor, the hair has to be pretty substantial.

WHOA! That dog is a bear fighting dog? Okay, that's pretty straight up gangsta.

I'd have a dog like this, only because I run into a lot of bears in my line of work. I might need that extra shag-rug assurance when in the field.
