Opinion 101 time!

I've seen mixed opinions on silhouettes. Does this work? I like it... she has beautiful bone structure and I can't bring myself to lose all the detail, although it's not a "true" silhouette. Does it just look underexposed? This is pretty much how I shot it.



I have more from this session but I wanted an opinion on this specifically. Partly because I have another shot like this with her daughter & her belly. And if it doesn't work it doesn't work.

Edit: If it doesn't work for you, why? What would you change?

as-is, I think it just seems like you got stuck between a silhouette, and some dramatic lighting attempt.
i think this lighting style would might have worked nicely if you had lit the belly area a little, just to emphasize it.
I don't entirely dislike this shot as it stands, but the window is way too bright for a non silhouette shot.

Her hair really destroys the outline of her face and most of the light is on her shoulders.

Hmm... I see what you mean about it being in between.

Does it help if I go darker with her? I know her hair's in her face. And I know it's still not all black. If I want to save this shot I don't think I can go all black because of her hair, then you really lose the outline of her face that her nose and lips currently provide. I don't know.... I really want to keep some of the light. Hell I liked the first one. But I don't want people in the general public raising eyebrows like "wtf was she thinking?"

I think it needs a bit more fill light on her face. There is such a thing as a semi-silhouette; you're looking at one in the original post. I think just a bit more detail in her face would help. Her forehead, nose, lips, and chin are all very delicately rim-lighted, so that's a plus. She has a slightly messy A-line type hairstyle with long bangs, so yeah, of course her hair's falling down because she's looking downward. The **important parts** on her head are her profile's features, which are delicately, subtly rim-lighted...just a tiny bit more fill in post will help a lot.

Yes, the added detail helped a lot. Remember, we the TPF crowd, are not the ones that need to like or appreciate the photo. We will not be the ones looking at it in the future. It's just one photo out of multiples, and I think it works for what it is.
