If you get to know your favourite lens by using it a lot and studying the results you can work out it's strengths and weaknesses (all lenses have them). Then you can take pictures that work to it's strengths and avoid as much as possible situations that show it's weaknesses.
Having said that, lenses tend to have a character that is often unique to the manufacturer.
When I was studying photography in the late 1970's a bunch of us took test photos with Nikon, Canon, Olympus and Leica cameras all with 50mm lenses. The test photos were identical and processed the same and showed clear differences between lenses. It got so that we could look at a photograph and usually tell you what camera was used.
We found that lens reviews only checked lens sharpness at the centre and at the edge and so manufacturers made sure that lenses were sharp at these two points. The bit between was often a bit fuzzy. A simple fix is to always use a small aperture so that you only use the centre of the lens.
If you are comfortable with your lens and it does what you want then stick with it. Only think about buying a new lens if you are pushing your old one to it's limits or it's bad habits are starting to annoy you.
