I am sure that your lens could have focused much closer than that. Why did you not move in closer?

That was the closest I could get with that lens. It's the 18-55mm kit lens.

Nice contrast in colors between the brown and the red leaf. Definitely try a tighter portrait crop as suggested by Bitter Jeweler to bring the leaf closer.

I would agree I think that the picture needs to be cropped way to much in the back ground... but that is just me.

Better.

I would have done it a bit tighter, and had the bottom of the twig closer to the left corner. Splitting hairs? Personal opinion...You know, it's all subjective.

I think the background is a bit too busy, but that is a nicer crop I think.
