Thanks for the constructive criticism! I think I will be able to go out and take fantastic photos now that you have enlightened and graced me with your ever so brilliant C&C!

Really? Then why don't you say in plain language what you learned? And what those photos need, to be improved?

1. You obviously think the pictures stink for a number of technical reasons.....I thought they were pretty clever creatively!.......lol....guess I was wrong and I hadn't thought about the items you pointed out before you pointed them out.....so thank you!
2. I am not sure why I am being asked to prove what I learned, as you don't think I am a Photographer based on your previous statements.
3. It's okay you don't like them, for all of the technical reasons you have hidden between your lines....... this shoot may be a total bust and an epic fail but an attempt nonetheless. I am self taught and maybe it shows! I am fairly new at the game so I appreciate all/any constructive information I get! Every little bit helps

I am not trying to be rude. You have focus down. You seem to understand DOF! Your processing is decent. But your framing and composition is straight off of FaceBook!

I would tone down the watermark.. that thing is huge. No one here is going to "Steal" your photos..... lol!


Your choice of settings is also strange to me?


These were all shot at 1600 ISO at 1/8000 of a second... at F1.4 ? WHY? You could have shot that at ISO100, had better image quality, and still have enough shutter speed to stop any movement! The F 1.4 I understand .. that is typical of these kind of shots. At least you understand DOF well enough to pull it off usually! But WHY 1/8000 at ISO 1600??

I liked your shoot but I have to admit I also enjoyed the critique by cgipson. I think u have some great ideas and certainly in #3 you really caught the beauty in that baby! I'm never as concerned with the crop as most others but despite the gentle sarcasm above, the CC is sound and a bit humorous. Again #3 is a hit both for the subject and how you captured it. I like #1 but can see the picture would be very much improved if the arm was just above the subject's eyes instead of covering them and #2 would likely be a better pic if the focus was the baby and not the leaf although to me it still has plenty of interest precisely because of the shallow DOF.

I like #3 and #4, they show the kid's playfulness pretty well IMO. The #1 is too tight and #2 has the wrong focus as Charlie already pointed out.

To be VERY honest......I got this lens for my birthday......I took my Son outside and was trying to practice a bit as I was having some issues with focus and so was playing around with a lot of different variables. I wasn't sure what I could do with this lens. The first picture is a salvageable one imo from some that were completely blown out.....then I changes my settings. Again, very new to the game so getting my settings right ALL the time is unlikely at this point.

So these are from last year in the summer.....again very new to photography (6mos and self taught) so probably would go out and use the same settings as I did here but thought I would post for some information on improvement. I think maybe a composition type of course might be in order.....at least that may be my biggest issue right now, not to ignore the other issues that are also present.

As for the watermark......I use a macro to do a number of photos at once in ps to re-size etc....wasn't really worried about anyone stealing it (and based on your information not sure anyone would want to lol).....just already done.

You can learn a lot here... but yes, some of us are sarcastic, and some even rude. Toughen that skin up a little... take the good, laugh at the bad... and you might do well here. There are basic guidelines that have been followed for centuries... starting with the painters. Knowing those guidelines can help you know WHEN to break them in an acceptable manner.

Or you can do the facebook thing.. they will tell you CRAP is wonderful, because most of them know nothing about art, photography, composition or much else. We also have a vey mixed population here, some know little... some know a lot. You have to decide yourself who is worth seriously listening to!

One guideline you can follow.. is always use the lowest ISO you can get away with, based on what you are trying to do... this will improve IQ. Unless you want noise / grain in an image... this will always help....

Perhaps I can amplify some of the points that Charlie made:

1. Cropping limbs is fine, if you have to, but always do it boldy, and NEVER crop little bits of limbs or bisect laterally! This would have been much better shot in portrait orientation allowing more of the child to be visible.

2. Again, better suited to a vertical/portrait orienation IMO. I understand (I think) what you were going for, but this sort of selective focus only really works well when the part in focus is of primary interest, such as, say, wedding rings in a bridal shot.

3. Comments as per #1 on the cropping of limbs. Also be cognizant of your backgrounds; the bright, white area upper right is very distracting, and the image appears to be out of level.

4. Again, think vertical! Your camera will work just fine when rotated 90 degrees, honest! I think moving your shooting position just a bit would also have eliminated the road in the background, which is less than attractive.

Just my $00.02 worth - your mileage may vary.

CorrieMichael, as we say here in England, "don't get your knickers in a twist!"
Some of the photographers on here are a little short in the tact department but mostly the advice is good - and Charlie's advice fits into that category. My first postings didn't get much better C&C than yours but I stuck with it, listened and worked at it. Now (after 18 months), when one of my photos gets a compliment from someone like Charlie, I GLOW for a week.

I'd say your work shows potential and you've got the concept of what makes a good photo... You've got some of the essential down but there are other things you need to learn that could turn these photos from "good for Facebook" snapshots into photos you'd be proud to have in your portfolio and which pro photographers will compliment you on.

I agree on the logo, it's nice but it's too big. You don't need one on here, I stopped using mine here till my work was (occasionally) worth stealing. :hippie:
