What's new

Pastels and Watercolors (and a few other art media)

Latest. For the next 3 weeks in class I’ll be painting variations on this lighthouse scene. Same lighthouse as before, Portland Head Light but I left off the outbuildings. Trying to keep it simple and loose. Still so hard to do. This one is sort of a blue hour version. It needs a bit more contrast I think. I started a sunrise as well but didn’t think to take a pic and I left it in the classroom to dry.

I like it! You're getting more comfortable with those loose strokes. Beautiful blues here!

You're not picking anything easy to capture, that's for sure. Kudos!

It would be nice to get one "from the sea" looking inland.

After the nor’easter I’ll head up there with my broom to get that view.

There may be something online to use as a reference. The lighthouse boat tours out of Portland come to mind.

Finished this watercolor that’s been sitting on my desk for a month.

I had to take lazy lobster down to Portland for a hair cut. They suggested meeting me at a nearby art store, when finished. I figured I'd just go browse around and leave when lazy lobster showed up.

Oops.

I have some basic pastels and charcoal but they are still packed in a box, somewhere. I just got a bunch of drawing paper, but no charcoal/pastel (textured) paper. I've been meaning to pick up some of those Primatek water colors (mineral pigments) and one of those nice porcelain palette dishes for watercolors. And we all can use a couple erasers and some organizing around the studio.

Aww...the Expressionist oil pastels! They're so bright and pretty. I always liked them. Have fun!!

Never did warm up to the Mi-Teintes paper - for oil pastels, anyway. Too textured (and you won't hear me complain about that very often!).

Can't wait to see some action with the charcoal.

Nice haul! 👍

Thanks. I haven’t told MLW yet, but she’s in MD.

Beauriful day in Sabattus so I went outside with my coffee. I did a fairly quick charcoal sketch on the greenish Mi-Teintes. Dock & Rock.let

Fantastic! I’m determined to try plein air painting this summer. I was thinking it would be awkward to be painting in public - it didn’t occur to me to paint in my own yard. Duh!

Paint those flowers, bay-bay!

Yes, start at home, otherwise you are goingbto get onlookers. If you don’t mind them, go for it.

Manu years ago I grabbed some pastels, a pad, and went to the Reflecting Pool ( Iwent to work with mom). I got two minutes into it and had a couple cops looking over my shoulder. I’ve been a gawker, too. I recall, when I was about 14, I vaught a class from the Corcoran School out sketching in the park across 17th Street from the school. I stood by a particularly pretty (though quite a bit older than me) young lady, watching her draw. Yes, and admiring her, too.

I found the deck railing is too high to see thecwater when you sit, so I think I’m going to put a shallow “table top” on it he top of the railing, deep enough for a small plate snd cup of coffee. Add some outside bar stools and we’ll be good. Maybe I’ll ask for a plein air easel for my birthday or Christmas.
