Photography Terminology Pet Peeves

I think this has already been done before, but I had begun thinking about it while surfing the web this morning.

What photography terms that you see people use really irk you? It doesn't have to be justified, because I know a lot of mine aren't.

1. Photo shoot

This is situation specific. It mostly annoys me when somebody who's learning about photography uses it in every instance of taking photos. Taking pictures of your kid outside on a swing is not a photo shoot. It's what thousands of moms do every day. Don't commercialize family memories lol.

2. "Sessions"

I really wish this term would be replaced amongst family and lifestyle/portrait photographers. Every time I hear someone use this term I really want to ask them where they got their degree in clinical photography. Do they offer a support group with maternity shoots? I don't know what it is about "session" that makes me want to hack into a photog's website and delete all instances. It just seems roll-my-eyes worthy.

Picture or Pic used on a professional website. Or even Photo. Anyone can take a picture. I take pic's with my cell phone. My kids drew me pictures when they were in grade school. If you are a professional I hope you are creating photographs. Just sounds cheap or childish.

Something Photo as a business name. It reminds me of the one hour photo lab at Wal Mart.

Snaps on a website or as a part of a business name. I have snaps on my coat. My kids snap at each other every day and it pushes me to the snapping point.

Shoot or Shooting on a website. Shootings were what happened at Columbine and in the Colorado movie theater. Now used as a term talking among photographers it doesn't bother me.

Mine is "Image Capture". Has a ring to it thats "professional" sounding and over-used by nooBs and FB fauxtogs heh

Like the many people who regularly employ the word "utilized" wrong, displaying ignorance. Its lame to use the word "image captures" and such and the pics look like typical FB/bestbuy crap

The use of a device, such as a scanner or digital camera, to create a digital representation of an image.

Oh, we used to do that in the old country all the time. First you need a box, preferably with an open top and with dark sides. Then you need some bait. A beam of setting sun works well. You place the baited box in the underbrush, or wherever the images congregate, and when an image comes wandering by and jumps in the box, you close the lid. Easy Peasy. The only real problem is getting it out. If its one of the Red AWritches variety, you need a forked stick or other conversion tool. Jaypigs just come sliding out, no fight at all once you got them.

I haven't thought of any photography terms that really bother me that much, but you really hit my "pet peeve" nerve about the word "utilize." The reason people so often employ this term incorrectly is because, imo, there is NO correct time to use the word "utilize."
There is never an instance when "utilize" is a better choice than the word "use." Period.

I'm never one to let words get to me too much but for some reason the word "tog" irks me. or "pho-tog"

I'm guilty of saying shoot all the time. "doing a shoot tonight" just always feel pretentious (sp?) if i say going on a photoshoot.

Piggybacking on photo shoot, I'd like to add:

Client-
Photographing your cousin on a gravel road/ train tracks and adding the Florabella dreamy action kit does make him/her a client. It makes them your cousin whom you wanted to practice on.

Bokeh: (when overused) Especially when the user thinks it simply means "those blurry dots" and nothing else. Usually spelled "brokeh" repeatedly throughout the thread.

Tog: Ya, I know it's an old and accepted nickname, but I always think the user is trying WAY too hard to sound hip and cool. I love how it rhymes with "trog"

Glass: ...because "lens" is just too mainstream.

I hate it when people spell lense instead of lens. Many dictionaries will say that it's an acceptable alternate spelling for lens. But that doesn't make me hate it any less. I think that people just see 'Lenses' and think that taking away just the 's', is all you need to un-pluralarize it.

I utilize a digital image capture technique when I go do my professional photo shoot sessions to snap photos of my dog. (Can I offend any more people?)
