Hi

Well, thought i would do some headshots with a kid for the first time..... was trickier than i expected (they tend not to want to do what they are told lol). But here are a couple, let me know what you think.
Very little pp so far, more or less as shot.

Thought i would stick here and see what you thought, ideas for improvement welcome.

Well this newb thinks the lighting is decent but just a question, why chop his hair off? And part of his ear in no. 2? I think 2 would have been a great picture if not for the lack of the ear and the top of the hair and the landscape style. IMO, I prefer headshots to be portrait style (vertical) rather than horizontal, simply because horizontal (landscape) seems to leave a lot of dead space unless you really know what you're doing or have a purpose in it.

I too think the lighting is nice, but why use a horizontal frame if there is a solid color background?

For me the light in the second photo is the best (but part of his ear is cut off), the first needed the kicker at a shallower angle to the lens, and 3 is basically a fail.

Black shirt+black background=floating head. The second one is nice for a good, well lit headshot. The darker ones will make good shots if you are going for a contrasty, dark side kind of look, but for a basic head shot your fill light needed to be a bit brighter.
The composition you already know, but I am guessing you were working on the lighting anyway... and probably learned what you needed to learn too.

I agree, #2 is great except for the chop, and also I'm not happy with the scrunched-up-looking neck. Get the chin up and shoot higher if it looks like he's looking down at you.
