Photoshoot with my daughter

My daughter came to town this weekend to visit so I put her in the studio as she has never had professional photos taken yet, she is 5.

Thank you to all who helped in the WB thread. I can't even find the words to say how much my workflow speed and productivity increased.

I got about 60 keepers after my cull, naturally they are only keepers as they are of my own kid..and the relatives will like them. Had this been a paying customer, I would have gotten about 25-30 out of it.

I have two issues of note learned out of this experience. I am still filling the frame...not leaving much play room. I am having trouble deciding how to crop for full body shots. Normally I do half and head shots etc...tried to do some full body as mom wanted her to dance and play and stuff...so I was clueless on how to corp for those, so I pretty much just left them alone. lol

These are my first round edits. Minor adjusts and crops. They are not print ready, as I doubt I'll work on each one preparing it for print.

I'm just gonna put up 10 ish or so. Feel free to share your thoughts and/or room for improvement and/or any mistakes I may have made and missed.

This also reminded me...I hate shooting kids. lol. They move too much, and don't cooperate well. lolol

The next two posts will have 5 shots each for easier viewing.

It's funny, we caught most of those in the last 15 minutes...cameras were firing, flashes flashing, monolights beeping....lol. She was not very cooperative at the start and there was more sitting than shooting....but once she started to have fun and play along...**** got real. lol.

I had another photog with me shooting as backup in case I F'ed up. He was behind us playing with his 70-200 2.8 picking up ambient light shots in between my flashes...so it will be neat to see what he got. He also used his 10-24 and got some crazy playful angles as well.

cropping looks pretty good for most of the shots one I had a big problem with was you chopped off her hands and corner you see where your backdrop ends. other one that was bugging me was the head shot with motion blur. other than minor things you have a lot of really good shots.

The color space of these photos is Adobe RGB. You want to watch that as many people looking at photos on the Internet do not use color space aware browsers. They're going to see the color incorrectly. When you post photos to the Internet your best bet is to make sure their color space is sRGB.

Since you mentioned your earlier WB thread, compare this to your posted original and see if you can tell what's different.

Thanks. These are not final cuts..so the ones with the corner showing would either get a crop or not make it. I couldnt decide where to crop so I left it for now. I'd never print a photo showing anything other than subject and backdrop.

I was surprised I did not get more motion blur...lol...kid wouldn't hold still.

I was mad at myself for the hands...I soooo know better....lol

skin tone much better and the black is "more black" pull out a tad blue or cyan? add a hair of reds? I still have trouble "seeing" such things...I do like your edit much better though. Slight difference yet greatly improved.

I just popped it in lightroom and added +6 on temp and tint and it came out like yours. Is that all you did or did ya do something else to it?

You see the difference well and describe it well. Time and practice and you'll be able to see the fault directly without the side by side comparison.

I did three very minor things:

1. Shifted the WB to remove the slight bluish cast.
2. Raised the contrast a smidge using Levels in Photoshop.
3. Darkened the black material she's resting on.

The only negative that I could draw out of these that hasn't been mentioned, and I may just be personal taste, but it looks like you are shooting "down" in most of these, especially the full body shots.

It's not much, but I would prefer if the camera was more at eye level with the subject.

You are VERY heavy on the skin smoothing. She's got beautiful skin and you've made her skin look plastic, hair look like fuzz with very over sharp eyes in the one that is obviously your favorite.
