Can others edit my Photos
Photos OK to edit
I was looking through the forums and was surprised by the number of people who have decided that they don't want anyone editing their pictures. I was just wondering if anyone would care to share why they chose to allow/not allow editing on their photos.

I (obviously) have decided to allow editing on my photos because I'm always up for someone else's ideas or interpretation of my work. It's easier to see their vision if I can literally see their vision, rather than just seeing it in my head based off of a description. How about you all??

I allow people to edit for a few reasons;
It teaches me different ways to do things since most will tell you what they did.

It shows me what I did wrong and can improve on

I like seeing different peoples take.

-it's easier to show what could be done to make it better versus trying to explain

Chiller (former member) said it best..... My camera, my vision.

I have Not OK selected, but if asked nicely, I usually don't mind. I, too, like to see others interpretation on my shot.

Darn it I want Chiller back!

In other news from what I can see the greater difference is in how people use and post to the site; some (possibly the greater number at the moment) are learning photography and thus allowing others to edit and advise on their work helps give them alternative ideas as to creative choices in their work; as well as helping them to better perfect their editing methods.
For others they are more secure in what they produce and show; they area bit further along and when they post a shot they are confident that what they are showing is what they want to show. It's not so much a rejection of critique as it is that they are simply already content with what they have produced.

Oh and some others are just nutty control freaks ;)

When I registered, I chose the "My Photos are NOT ok to edit." Why? Because I really had no clue what that was about, and thought I was giving permission for people to just willy-nilly decide that they wanted to download my picture and change it and use it themselves...in other words, I stupidely misinterpreted the POINT of it. I VERY quickly realized the real point of it, and changed my selection. There is a LOT of room for improvement in both my photography skills AND my editing skills (ESPECIALLY my editing skills), and so letting others SHOW me, on one of my own photos, what they would do differently seems like an invaluable way to improve your skills to me.

I'm open to suggestion, just don't screw with my 'vision' unless I give permission ;)

Honestly I just don't want to offer a blanket statement that it's ok to do so.

Only I can edit Trever1t shots

I definitely want people to edit my photos as long as they tell me what they did in Lightroom or Elements to get it that way. Or how different lighting/white balance would have affected the pictures.

Just to point out realistically. There are few members that have both a sophisticated vision of how a certain image SHOULD LOOK, and the editing skills to make it happen.

posting to see what I have as mine....

Edit: never changed it since showing up, never had any issues with it, so never changed it back. Rarely do I see shots of mine edited (guess thats a good thing)

I would think that most career pro's would select the NOT OK option. I make websites for a living, and it is NOT OK to go edit my websites lol. Kind of the same idea

For the most part this is a beginner forum, or at least a predominately teaching/learning situation. Quite different to your analogy.

There really should be an "ask me first" option. In my experiences though, I have only had one person say no to me when I asked.

For the most part this is a beginner forum, Yes, unfortunately (for everyone involved) or at least a predominately teaching/learning situation. I would say it is a predominantly I want to teach/I don't really care to learn situation Quite different to your analogy. The analogy is correct. I don't think he/she is talking about someone going to make changes to a website that is already up and running

Now, back to the OP. Very interesting question.

I checked the "It's not ok..." button when I first signed up and knew barely anything about this place. Since then I decided it was not a good idea, for me, to post any photos here so I haven't and I have no regrets about this. The reasons are better left alone and no very interesting in terms of your question anyway.

But it is partly the same reasons that made check the "it's not ok..." box and never show any of my work. I DO NOT care to be C&Ced by people who know from nothing to basically not much and this place is so good at scaring away good photogs that there are very few of them around. Considering I have 30+ fairly successful years as both a pro photog and an artist, do I really want to hear what Joe Blow, who got his camera just 3 weeks ago, thinks of my work? HELL NO! And I don't want him/her to mess with my images either.

You are fairly new here and you may not know me so let me make a few things clear for you. I DO NOT think I am the ultimate photog. Actually I have said so a few times because I am not. Technically I am far from the best and I will bow down to a number of members here who know much more than I do. Why do you think I stick around? Lol.

But where my vision is concerned I will suffer no fool. And this place is full of fools. From the guy who bought his camera 3 weeks ago and wants to teach me composition; to the one who got his a year ago and feels so superior because he knows more thant the one I mentioned just before; to the one who bought his 10 years ago but spends 5 days a year parading around with his Leica but has no understanding of anything creative; etc, etc, etc...

It just gets stranger and sadder and downright depressing.

When I want someone's opinion, I get in touch through PM. This way I touch the right person and avoid all the fools.

You know, I pass for a snob here for the simple reason that I: am fairly successful as a photog/make a living over $20,00@year/put fools in their place, but that is quite ok because it allows me to say what I want, what I feel. Too many members feel offended because they know I am right, because they have no self confidence, because this, because that...

**** them all.

Trust yourself and no one else.

Good luck to you.
