Pictures are okay/are NOT okay to edit??

Jeeze...after that I have no idea where I fit in, but there is a bit of craxy in all of us, I fear....

I have not OK to edit. Editing is an artform and IMHO best left to the final design of the photographer to augment and complete their vision. I do undertsand that some are not proficeient in certain software and editing techniques, but I think its a necessary evil to learn.

The request to edit goes wthout saying as far as I am concerned, and I think that those who suggest edits should teach the photog what they think needs to be adjusted and allow the photog to edit to that extent, learn, and decide if they like the result. I have seen more edits that I haven't cared for than those I have.

I am with those who say complete your own vision with your own hand.

When I registered, I chose the "My Photos are NOT ok to edit." Why? Because I really had no clue what that was about, and thought I was giving permission for people to just willy-nilly decide that they wanted to download my picture and change it and use it themselves...in other words, I stupidely misinterpreted the POINT of it. I VERY quickly realized the real point of it, and changed my selection. There is a LOT of room for improvement in both my photography skills AND my editing skills (ESPECIALLY my editing skills), and so letting others SHOW me, on one of my own photos, what they would do differently seems like an invaluable way to improve your skills to me.
I did the same thing for the same reason, I just simply didn't realize at the time. Within a week I changed it to OK to edit! I have yet to post some photos to be edited;) Great question Sammie_Lou

But you've edited people's photos......

Megan, yes I have when I have been given permission to do so.

I would think that most career pro's would select the NOT OK option. I make websites for a living, and it is NOT OK to go edit my websites lol. Kind of the same idea

Most career pros would NOT post one of their best shots in the first place.

Does it hurt anyone? No...Does it help anyone? Yes. So let them learn. Basically a quick teaching aid as folks pass on methods and visions one cannot put into words, anything that can help that person see the light sooner is good.

Shoot well, Joe

I chose OK because I don't know much about editing and like to see others visions of the same scene I captured. No one really has edited and reposted anything I've shown yet. I've never asked though.

I no longer post photos here for a few reasons, the main being an impossibly slow interent connection, but also because as someone else stated, I have enough experience [30 yrs approx] under my belt that I don't care to have someone with three hours of experience, who is opening their own business next week, telling me what they "think" is worng with my photos. I Chose the not ok to edit feature when I joined in 2007 partly because I was naive enough to think it would prevent theft of my photos , but mostly because it's 'my' photo and therefore no one but me should be allowed to mess with it.

I saw 2 30 year comments so I have to chime in. I think it's kind of a cop out to say I don't post photos because I've been a photog forever and I know my photos are good. I get called in to program robotic equipment at companies that have had guys working there 30 years and couldn't do what I learned in 1 year. I'm not saying that the people who are doing this are bad photographers, but I am saying doing something for a long time does not necessarily make you better than someone with little to no experience. I think just as many people post photos here to share as they do to get critique.

I dont really understand the 'I am confident enough in my photos to not want some noob critiquing them" line of thought. I'm not saying I disagree with not allowing your photos to be edited. I'm not even saying I necessarily disagree with that reason for it. I just don't get it. If you're confident enough in your pictures, wouldn't that also make you confident enough to think to yourself "lol, thanks for the advice 'noob'" and then ignore it, or even state why you disagree with them?

I can tell you I learn as much about photography critiquing and editing other people's work as I do my own. SOmetimes more, because with my own work, I often have a sort of tunnel vision, that doesn't allow me to see all its flaws. Even if I felt supremely confident about a photo, I'd at least be fine with people critiquing it, because even if I'm not personally getting anything out of it, maybe they are.

Edits are like opinions and opinions are like assholes. I'm not down with other people touching my asshole.
