Can others edit my Photos
Photos OK to edit
Hi all - I just started shooting and was wondering why my photos come out so blah. Seem like its lacking something. Shot with canon 7d, canon ef 20mm. Both taken with aperture priority. Thanks!

Cloudy day - the sky is white so that detracts from it. Were these shot in RAW or JPG?

ok - i will attempt again this weekend with random shots. the pics were taken in raw.

What are you post processing with? If you're using Lightroom be sure to apply camera profiles otherwise RAW images are completely neutral.

There it is.

Random shots will more than usually look just like...... Well...... random shots.

Try for a subject. Try for decent composition. Try for good lighting. You will more than likely be much happier with the results.

thanks for the advice all. i will try it out and post back.

thanks for the tip in LR. i applied the camera profile and noticed a difference.

If your photos seem to be blah...Get closer...Fill the frame with your subject.

Looks like blah weather at a blah time of day.

Knowing how to use your camera will help, do you think it should take fantastic photos without any imput ?

They're also both underexposed...

I'm new at this. Have read but not tried:
Your eyes see differently than your camera and you can search the internet for "dynamic range" and read more about that. You can see details in the shadows that your camera "doesn't" see.
Overcast light makes everything dim and flat.
Things you can try:
Over Expose
Change color Modes (Vivid or Landscape)
Shoot RAW and use post-processing

I've not tried any of these but have read about it in some lessons I purchased online. To see e-newsletters and find info on purchasing the lessons go here http://www.digital-slr-guide.com/dslr-news.html
They have been very helpful. Lots more about shooting in different lighting situations but since it is copyrighted don't feel I can repeat it all here. Too much anyway.
The lessons were not expensive.

Funny, I had the same problem when I first got my 7D. Shots were all blah. I blamed the kit lense. I was so disappointed that I had spent all that money and my point and shoot took better pictures. I posted my first portraits here and asked for advice. Lo and behold it turns out I didn't know what the heck I was doing. I learned to use the light meter, learned how to adjust the ISO in conjunction with the correct shutter speed, got a big yummy reflector (lights will arrive tomorrow), studied PhotoShop and what do you know...it's a pretty good camera afterall. :er:
