Pink donut on DD cup came out orange under CF lighting?

Hi.

I was messing with my new D3200 today at work for a minute and took a picture of my Dunkin Donuts styrofoam cup that has a pink donut on it. I did this after manually adjusting the WB using a white sheet of paper at the same desk.

Anyways the pink donut appeared orange, not pink, in my preview mode on the lcd screen after snapping the picture. I changed the WB to "Fluorescent" 3 and 4 I think, and still got an orange donut, not pink. Am I doing something wrong?

Why is the donut coming out orange and not pink? Just wondering.

Your method of adjusting the WB is not sufficient.

Are you sure the white sheet of paper was really white?
Most white paper actually has a slight blue tint.
Because of that a gray card usually works better than something you think is white.
Gray cards are made so there are equal amounts of red, green, and blue (RGB) so no color is dominant.

Did you use the PRE custom white balance setting in your D3200? (pages 72 - 74 in the D3200 Reference Manual)

Our human eyes and brain make things we expect to be white look whiter than they usually are.
A digital camera can't do that and we have to use the white balance setting to tell the camera what type of light is lighting the scene.

When a digital photo comes out with an orangeish tint it usually means the light source is incandescent/tungsten lighting.
So the incandesent WB setting on the D3200 is a good starting place, and may be all you need to do.
Unfortunately, unlike higher tier Nikon DSLR's the D3200 does not allow manually setting the WB color temperature in the Shooting menu.

I did use the PRE setting yes, and also a white sheet of paper. The pink donut on my coffee cup was orange. However, it was a beautiful sunny day today, so I set the WB to OUTDOOR SUNNY (or whatever it's called) and took some outdoor shots of a yellow and then a green painted door and it was pretty accurate on the LCD screen as to what my eyes saw. So I guess it's all about lighting!

It doesn't sound right BUT the best way to set White Balance is with a grey card made specifically for the purpose. If you just pick up a random sheet of paper you will get random results.
