Managed to track this little beauty down again. Back on the river I initially saw it (I assume it's the same bird). Was able to get a bit closer this time too. Great looking specimen to see up close.

Cheers K. I suppose about 8-10 feet away. I'd have probably got away with a 70-200 instead of the 150-600 I had. It seems to have teamed up with resident Mallards which are quite used to being fed by humans so maybe the Pintail is becoming accustomed as well.
