What are your thoughts on Pinterest and have you had clients come to you with a list of I WANT THIS…

Fortunately the only one that comes to me with Pinterest photo ideas is family and I can tell them what I can and cannot and will not do.

Part of me does like Pinterest – I like the different posing ideas and love seeing all the creativity

My personal thoughts about pinterest are that it is a tool to help me with poses, if I need it. Just like a softbox or a light or a reflector. There are a lot of creative things on there that can help you when you aren't feeling so creative or are stuck in a rut. There are also a lot of things out there that aren't so good.

As far as family, well they are family and just tell them why you can't or won't do certain ideas. If they can't accept that, then I personally don't want to photograph them.

Ron, you nailed my thoughts. I use it as a tool as well. Can't get an example at the moment, but my family has come to me with ceratin prop ideas that are either not safe or not worth me investing in

Okay, I understand what you are saying now. How I would handle the not safe issue. It's a liability and I don't feel comfortable with that much risk. And as for props, just tell them that if they want to buy the stuff for then do it and you'll be glad to shoot it. (if you really don't want to shoot with the prop, then make sure you tell them to buy it for you and your photography business.)

I think for me, and I'm new and only a hobbyist, I love it and hate it. It gives me a sense of what they want, the style that they are looking for, etc. At the same time, it can create some unrealistic expectations. Luckily, those who ask me to take pictures know that I am new to this, and I tell them that I will use the pictures for inspiration but not to expect an identical copy (in terms of posing, lighting, quality, etc.)

In the past month I have had two moms show me tons of examples of babies in sitting poses. Both moms have babies that cannot sit unsupported yet... I can't teach your baby to sit just so we can get this shot.

Where I see the biggest issue is weddings. There are absolutely amazing shots on there, and a large majority were captured as a split second of a natural moment. For example, the image of the couple praying together while holding hands around a corner (so they don't see each other before the ceremony). I've seen it redone about 9billion times, and not a single one looks as amazing as the original. They all look like "hey, let's pray together so our photog can get this super cute shot" and none hold the emotion that the original does.
